Veronica Elaine Spencer Girton was born September 9, 1959, in Shelbyville, Kentucky, to Catherine Irvin Spencer and Anderson Spencer. She was the sixth child of their ten children. In her youth, she began her Christian journey and gave her life to Christ at Taylorsville Church. Later, after moving to Louisville, she attended Canaan Church from time to time. Her education began in the Shelby County Public Schools System, and she received her G.E.D from Jefferson Community Technical College (J.C.T.C). Eventually, the Spencer family moved to Louisville for better job opportunities.

She always had a beautiful smile that complimented the beauty that was also on the inside. When the family was living on College Street, her brother Ricky had a best friend, Vincent, who noticed Veronica and was quite interested. Although she did not show much interest in the beginning, by the time the family moved to the Newburg area (Alba Way), Vincent knew he was making headway when her salutation to him was, “Hey Love”. Hence, the love story began followed by marriage, and it continued for a lifetime.

Veronica believed in family gatherings and loved spending time preparing meals, reunions, and just being in each other’s presence. She was an excellent cook, and everyone was grateful to sit at her table to enjoy green beans, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, beef roast, chili, and her lemon pies, to name a few. Everything she cooked was memorable.

In 1994, Veronica became a JCPS bus driver transporting students from home to school and back. Whether it was elementary, middle, or high school aged students, Veronica transported them all. After 25 years of service, she retired from Jefferson County Public Schools System in 2019.

Throughout her life, Veronica had many interests. She was a U of K Wildcat fan which made life interesting in the Girton household. It was a house divided only when U of K and U of L played each other. She enjoyed decorating her home, watching HGTV, “The Young and the Restless” soap opera, Sisters TV drama by Tyler Perry, listening to old school R&B and gospel music, and playing the lottery,

Veronica had an amazing sense of humor---funny but never bit her tongue. She said what she meant and meant what she said. She was a fashionable dresser, a Diva who loved to shop, always kept her hair and nails freshly done, so when it was time for vacation or a get-a-way, she was ready to travel to Myrtle Beach, Florida, Las Vegas, Gatlinburg, St Louis, or to points unknown. Her greatest joy was lavishing her grandkids and great grandkids with love and attention.

Sadly, on Thursday, October 24, 2024, Veronica Elaine Spencer Girton, departed this life. She leaves behind to cherish their memories of her: husband, Vincent; children, Sotana Spencer, Antwon Spencer (Devon); and Vincent Lamont Girton, Jr. (LaTambria); siblings,
Katherine Tinsley, Roy Spencer, Beverly Tinsley (Larry), Ricky Spencer, Genoria Jefferies (Larry), and Melissa Allen (Keith); grandchildren, Demetrick Spencer, Satoyia Smith, Demarcus Spencer, Subrina Spencer, Christian Girton, and Amari Spencer; great-grandchildren, Karter Spencer, Kalli Wilson and Demetrick Spencer, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Renita Cain and Paula Girton; and a host of relatives and friends.
