Luster Mitchell Dix, Jr. was born Wednesday, May 11, 1960 in Louisville, Kentucky to Luster Mitchell Dix, Sr. and Nanny Catherine Lewis Dix. He was the 4th son of their five children. In the Newburg community, most families had 5-8 children, but the Dix was the exception, all of their children were boys.

From a child, his mother made sure all her boys knew about God. She would bring them all to church each Sunday. Luster began his Christian journey on July 7, 1968, when he gave his life to Christ at Community Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. William T. Shumake. Luster always kept a smile of his face and would engage in a conversation with anyone from all walks of life.

Educated in the Jefferson County Public School system, Luster excelled in sports-football and basketball for Seneca High School. After graduation, with pending scholarship offers from various colleges, Luster decided to join the US Army to see the world. His only request was that he would be able to play in the all-star game before being deployed. His request was granted and he was off to see the world. One other small hick-up was Luster had not turned 18 years of age yet and his parent’s permission was needed for him to enlist. After much discussion, Luster was able to stay in the army and did two tours of duty in Germany. When he received his Honorable Discharge from the service in 1985, Luster became a long-distance driver for CRST, driving 18 wheelers from the east to the west coast. He then worked for Coke as a driver for 10 years with no accidents or occurrences. He also worked for Louisville Metro Department oi Public Works as an equipment operator.

Luster was a genuine “Grill Master” who could smoke, barbeque, grill ribs and rib tips like non other. His ribs were legendary. When folks in the neighborhood heard Luster was grilling, folks stood in line to get whatever he was fixing for the day.

Other hobbies included watching and attending U of L football and basketball games, Luster was an Indianapolis Colts fan, too. Still thinking he was physically fit, he would participate in the 35 & older pick up games at the Newburg park. Whether he was attending a concert or listening to some old school R&B, jazz, Luster enjoyed his music, family, friends, and get-togethers.

On October 4, 2022, Luster Mitchell Dix, Jr., departed this life. He is survived by his only son, Jamar Dix, granddaughter Shamarra; brothers Gregory Dix, Stevie Dix, and Kevin Dix; two nieces Tasha and Valerie; and nephew Darrel, cousins and extended family. He will missed!
